Nasarawa State Police Command on Wednesday announced the arrest of a 42-year-old man, Ibrahim Hassan, for allegedly kidnapping a herdsman in Awe Local Government Area after collecting N10 million ransom from the victim before his release.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, ASP Ramhan Nansel, while speaking in Lafia said, the suspect, a gang leader of a kidnapping syndicate, carried out the abduction of a 23 year victim, Abubakar Babiri at his ruga while grazing his cattles.
“The Police received information that one Abubakar Babiri, a 23-year-old Herdsman of Jangwa village in Awe LGA of the state was abducted at his Ruga by unknown armed men and his family were made to pay the sum of N10 million (N10,000,000) as ransom before he was released.
“Upon receipt of the information, the command’s anti-kidnapping unit were deployed to carryout extensive investigation into the matter and arrest the perpetrators of the act.
“Consequently, while acting on credible intelligence, the gang leader of the kidnapping syndicate, Ibrahim Hassan (AKA Bature), a 42-years-old man was arrested and upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to the commission of the offence.
The PPRO further explained that kidnapper shared N5 million out if the N10 from the ransom collected and gave the remaining balance of N5m to his gang members who are presently at large.
ASP Nasnsel said the Commissioner of Police, Adesina Soyemi, while directing that the case be properly investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Lafia, had warned all criminal elements in the state to desist from such act as the Police would go after them where ever they may be.
