The Awujale and Paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed on at the age of 91.
The revered monarch, who reigned for over six decades, reportedly died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, few hours after the announcement of the death of the country's former President, Muhammadu Buhari.
The late Awujale, who ascended the throne in 1960, was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential and longest-serving traditional rulers in Nigeria.
He was not only a monarch but a symbol of cultural pride, political wisdom, and royal integrity. His death marks the end of an era for the Ijebu kingdom and traditional rulership in Nigeria.
Oba Adetona, was known for his outspoken stance on governance, national unity and ethics in leadership.
Born on May 10, 1934, the late monarch was installed as the Awujale at just 26 years old.
He would go on to transform Ijebuland into a beacon of peace, development, and cultural resilience. Under his reign, Ijebuland witnessed infrastructural growth, business expansion, and social harmony.
A first-class monarch with global recognition, Oba Adetona was instrumental in advocating Constitutional roles for traditional rulers and was a strong voice during military regimes and democratic transitions.
In 2021, the Olabisi Onabanjo University renamed its School of Governance Studies in his honour—a testament to his commitment to leadership and education.
Meanwhile, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has described the death of Awujale as a great loss to the state and Nigeria.
Abiodun, in a statement he personally signed stated that "It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland. Oba Adetona joined his ancestors today, July 13, 2025 at the age of 91 leaving behind a remarkable legacy that has significantly shaped Ijebuland, Ogun State and Nigeria in general".
"It is indeed double sadness that Oba Adetona joined his ancestors the same day that the former President, Muhammadu died in a London, the United Kingdom hospital".
"Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona was a remarkable royal father, who ascended the throne in 1960, marking the beginning of a transformative era for Ijebuland. Throughout his reign, he was a beacon of unity, cultural preservation, and progressive development. His dedication to the welfare of his people was evident in his efforts to foster educational advancements, healthcare improvements, and economic growth within the state and Nigeria".
"Under his guidance, Ijebuland witnessed remarkable strides in infrastructure and community development, establishing itself as a model of progress in Ogun State. His leadership not only enhanced the cultural heritage of Ijebuland with the Ojude Oba festival attaining international standards but also solidified its reputation as a thriving hub of commerce and tradition".
