The National Working Committee (NWC) of the  Labour Party (LP) on Friday endorsed the 2023 Presidential candidate of the party, Peter Obi as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

The party, which has equally endorsed Governor Alex Otti of Abia State's re-election bid and Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour as the party's flag bearer in Lagos State, expressed confidence that Obi will unseat President Bola Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Abayomi Arabambi, who disclosed this in a statement issued in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, said many Nigerians; especially youths are currently yearning for Obi due to Tinubu’s policies that are not favourable to the masses.

According to Arabambi, the main focus of the Labour Party in 2027 is to unseat President Tinubu in 2027 through democratic means, with Peter Obi as the front-runner for the presidency in 2027.

He said, “Our major focus is getting the APC out of office only through the ballot box if Nigerians so desire, and not through illegitimate means”.

He said, "Peter Obi would once again represent the LP in the 2027 presidential race, and reiterated the party’s determination to support Governor Otti’s re-election bid in Abia and Rhodes-Vivour’s gubernatorial candidate in Lagos".

“We are united in our resolve to bring about a better Nigeria under the leadership of Peter Obi."

Arabambi accused the NLC President, Joe Ajaero and his Deputy, Professor Theophilus Ndubuaku of spreading malicious and false statements, which the party claims threaten the peace and unity of the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

He alleged the NLC of disrupting LP’s gubernatorial campaigns in 2023, stressing that the NLC supported candidates the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), at the expense of the LP’s candidates.

According to Arabambi, Ndubuaku and his allies within the NLC are using their positions to attack the integrity of Julius Abure, accusing the LP National Chairman of alleged wrongdoings without presenting credible evidence.

He also expressed concerns over what it describes as an “unrelenting campaign of misinformation,” with Ndubuaku’s press releases serving as a tool to undermine both Abure’s leadership and the country’s judiciary, as well as the credibility of the Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.

Arabambi listed several states, including Lagos, Imo, Nasarawa, Cross River, Ogun, Oyo, Enugu, Rivers, and Plateau, where 

Arabambi decried the NLC’s shift away from its core responsibility of defending the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers, saying that the leadership of the labour union is busy itself with divisive and undemocratic tactics aimed at sowing discord within the LP ranks.

Arabambi claimed that Ajaero and Ndubuaku were pursuing personal agendas, exploiting the NLC’s power for authoritarian ends, particularly in their treatment of Abure.
