The Vice-Chancellor, Osun State University, Uniosun, Professor Clement Adebooye, has disclosed that over 10,000 of its students has started benefitting from the Federal Government educational loan fund.
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund, a federal government loan scheme aimed at assisting students of public institutions with financial support for their educational pursuit and commenced operations this year.
Speaking at the Uniosun Alumni Day as part of its convocation events on Tuesday at the Olagunsoye Oyinlola Auditorium, main campus in Osogbo, Professor Adebooye said the over 10,000 students that applied for the loan would benefit from the N280million disbursed to the school as fees.
The Vice Chancellor reiterated that the school would not increase its fees despite pressure by economic reality in the country as a way of showing concern to wepfare of the student population.
The loan scheme is a Federal Government intervention under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which expected to provide students with the financial support needed to cover tuition fees.
Speaking at the during the Alumni Day Lecture, Orientation, and Award Ceremony, in Osogbo, Osun State, the Vice Chancellor stressed that UNIOSUN is the first state owned institution in the country access the NELFUND facility.
Adebooye while reinitiating the school management commitment to prioritizing the students welfare, disclosed that the tuition fee of the school will not be increased despite the need to.
He said, "I want to inform you that this University had course to increase it fees because things had changed economically in the country, but we as a management decided against it in solidarity with parents of our students.
"And when this University heard about the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, of the federal government of Nigeria, we keyed into it very quickly, and we are the first state University in Nigeria to receive the NELFUND grant to the tune of N280 million which is already in the account of the University for over 10,000 students and it it will be disbursed into their school fees with effect as the University resumes session."
Earlier, the Alumni association of the institution gave 20 students with a minimum of 3.5 CGPA a N100,000 scholarship to assist them in ensuring that financial challenges do not hinder their academic pursuits.
The Global President of the association, Abdulbasit Abubakar, adds, "our motivation for running this programme is to support 20 students who are doing well academically but are not financially buoyant with N2 million scholarship.
"For a candidate to be eligible, there must be a record that the candidate cannot truly finance his/her education and posses a minimum of 3.5 CGPA"
