....there was no extension
Contrary to reports making the rounds that the tenure of the Inspector Of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun's tenure will end in September 2024 and he has been given an extension for another for years in line with the new Police Act, it was reliably gathered that IGP Egbetokun's tenure is not ending in 2024.
Investigations revealed that on assumption of office as the Inspector General of Police in September 2023, the new Police Act approved by the National Assembly which stipulated back four year tenure took effect from 2023 hence Egbetokun's tenure will end in 2024
"IGP Egbetokun tenure is covered by the amended Nigeria Police Act, 2020 (Amendment) Bill, which increased the service years of police personnel from 35 years to 40 years of service, and from 60 to 65 years of age.
"So the tenure of the IGP was not extended as being construed. His letter letter of appointment state's 4 years. I think this should be clarified
The Senate had, in July 2023, passed a bill that amended the Police Act 2020 introducing a new clause under Section 8, which changed the provision that mandates public servants to retire after 35 years of service or at 60 years of age, to 40 years in service and 65 years for retirement.
Egbetokun, who was appointed IGP in June 2023, will clock 60 years tomorrow (September 4, 2024).
The Senate had modified Section 18 of the Police Act 2020 by replacing subsection (8) with the following revised clause: “(8) Notwithstanding any other provision, every police officer shall serve in the Nigeria Police Force for 40 years or until they reach the age of 65, whichever comes first.
It was gathered that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who is satisfied with the performance of the Inspector General of Police has expressed support for the IGP's continued stay in office following questions about how long Egbetokun should stay
