A Boat with 40 passengers capsized in Dundaye Village of Wamakko local government area of Sokoto State on Sunday with 25 victims still missing.
It was gathered that the boat which was said be over loaded beyond capacity with over 40 passengers capsized in Dundaye River 6 kilometers west of Sokoto metropolis at the middle of the river which was already flooded its banks.
Eyewitness who was interviewed through phone, Malam Ayuba Maya Dundaye, confirmed to that the victims who were mostly women and children, were crossing the river to their farms across the river when the unfortunate incident occurred.
Ayuba added that the boat with passengers sank at the middle of the river at more than 100 metres deep.
He said experts divers and swimmers in the village rushed to the scene for rescue but were only able to rescue 15 out of more than 40 passengers, saying that 25 victims were still unaccounted for as at the time of filling this report, while effort was still going on to locate the rest of the victims.
When asked, if any official of Government visited the scene of the incident, Ayuba said only the representative of the district Head Sarkin Adar Dundaye was atbyhe scene to lend voice to the rescue efforts.
When contacted, the Special Advisor to Sokoto state governor on State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Nasir Garba Kalambaina, said he was not aware of the incident but quickly gathered his rescue team and that of zonal Director of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, which also.despatched their officials to the scene for rescue operation.
" I am optimistic my personnel would ensure the immediate rescue of the missing victims alive by God's grace." Says Kalambaina
