A pro-democracy group, the People's Congress, has warned that the arrest of 23 Local Government Caretaker Committee (CTC) Chairmen and members in Rivers State will lead to anarchy.
The group's warning comes after a factional Rivers State House of Assembly called on the Nigeria Police Force to arrest the CTC members.
The People's Congress described the call for arrest as a show of shame and accused the factional lawmakers of attempting to incite anarchy in the state.
The group, in a statement signed by its leader, Dr Nicholas Udenta, explained that the Governor Siminalayi Fubara's administration constituted the Caretaker Committees to manage the local governments pending the next election, as allowed by the constitution.
The People's Congress urged the Nigeria Police and other law enforcement agencies to disregard the call for arrest, describing it as unlawful and tantamount to calling for anarchy.
The group also accused the factional lawmakers of witch-hunting the Fubara administration and attempting to destabilize the state.
The statement reads, "Their continuous vendetta and plots against the government and people of Rivers State are getting out of hand and they need to stop playing politics with the development of the state.
"The latest show of shame was their unlawful call for the Police to arrest the duly-constituted Caretaker Committee Chairmen and members in Rivers State.
"Their call is tantamount to calling for anarchy. We urge the good officers and men of the Nigeria Police and other law enforcement agencies to disregard the call of the saboteurs pretending to be lawmakers."
