Wives of Ogun State lawmakers at the weekend visited the Stella Obasanjo Children's Home in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital and donated gifts to the children, as part of activities marking the 1st year anniversary of the 10th State House of Assembly.
The spouses of the lawmakers led by the wife of the Speaker, Dr. (Mrs) Olayinka Elemide, said, the visit was to give the children in the orphanage a sense of belonging.
Flanked by wives of other lawmakers, Dr. (Mrs.) Elemide said they decided to visit the Stella Obasanjo Children's Home so as to celebrate with children and to also make them happy.
She called for improved welfare, love and kindness to children across the country, saying that this will give them a sense of belonging and assurance that the future is bright for them.
She emphasised that children across the country, especially those in various orphanage homes, need and expect love, care, compassion and pampering.
She noted that children are the future of every country and needed to be groomed with utmost care and protected irrespective of family background.
She said, "we are here to give the children sense of belonging and assure them that the future is bright for them. They are the future of the country and need to be groomed with utmost care and protection, irrespective of family background.
“For this reason, we have come here today to identify with them and let them know that they are loved.
By so doing, they are assured that the society has not neglected them and the future is bright for them. We should always express our love and care towards their welfare.”
She emphasised that governments at all levels have intensified efforts, aimed at providing safety measures for children through numerous humanitarian programmes.
She said, “I just want to encourage more Nigerians to support the special kids and orphans. It is our collective responsibility. We should support them. I believe the government cannot do everything. People should come onboard to support the efforts of the government.
Items donated included rice, biscuits, indomie noodles, juice, toiletries and others.
