The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dr Ajibola Basiru has advised the organised labour to engage the federal government over complaints from some quarters on the recent salary increment.
Speaking on the side of Osun APC central senatorial meeting held at the party Secretariat in Osogbo, he said the increment is a good development capable of relieving pain of fuel subsidy removal on the workers.
While assuring that the Federal Government will sustain payment of the new salary increment for the affected workers, the former Senator prevailed on Labour Unions to engage government on its complaints rather than being confrontational to get better deal for its members.
His words, "Labour unions need to continue to engage various government to ensure there is better deal for their members. It is a matter of perspective. Their responsibility is to ensure they get the best as they consider what to do for workers. And for the governemnt to see what is attainable within the ambit of resources available to the government and also some other contending needs in terms of infrastructure development and planning for the future development of the country.
"Federal government would sustain the increment. Before the announcement is made, the economics of it would have been worked out by the relevant agencies, necessary consultation would have been made, so I believe that the increment of wage is well though out and it is something that is sustainable and it is a welcome development and to be able to cushion the effect of the removal of fuel subsidy.
"State governments have responsibility to ensure that they are alive to their responsibility to pay their workers. The states also need to work to increase their IGR and prioritize the welfare of their workers because security and welfare is a paramount purpose of government as provided under the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria".
