A forner Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, has formally resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and all its organs, following what he described as the party’s departure from the path of rectitude.
Ihedioha, who is an ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, made his departure formal in a resignation letter addressed to the Acting National Chairman of the Party, the party Chairman in Imo State as well as the Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT).
The letter titled “Resignation From The Peoples Democratic Party,” Dated April, 23,2024, read: “Since 1998, I have contributed my quota to the development and transformation of the Peoples Democratic Party as one of the founding members.
“All these years, I have taken pride in the fact that the PDP is a party that will always look inwards for internal reforms and provide credible leadership for the people, whether in power or outside power. I have had the benefit of serving and benefitting from the party at various levels.
“Regrettably, in recent times, the party has taken on a path that is at variance with my personal beliefs.
“Despite my attempt to offer counsel, the party is, sadly no longer able to carry out internal reforms, enforce its own rules or offer credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
“It is in the light of the foregoing, that I am compelled to offer my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party effective immediately. While this decision was difficult to take, I, however, believe that it is the right one. Despite this resignation, I will always be available to offer my services towards the deepening of democracy and good governance in Nigeria.”
The former Imo State Governor, is the first high profile PDP stalwart to resign from the party a few days after the Caucus and National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings which apparently failed to live up to his expectations.
Recall, the Chairman of the party’s BoT, Sen. Adolphus Wabara had in his opening remarks raised concerns over the continued stay of the party’s Ag. National Chairman and Secretary which he said didn’t follow party’s rules and convention.
Ihedioha’s exit has led to questions about the party’s future in the Southeast. The zone had before the 2023 general elections been a stronghold of the PDP since it’s formation in 1998. The National Secretariat is yet to issue a formal response to the development.
However, a high ranking party leader who spoke in confidence said, “ The PDP is a political party all Nigerians are free to join and leave whenever they feel. I can assure you many others are joining us and will continue to do so. Politics is all about interest.”
