Students miss exams due to SSANU, NASU warning strike

Some students of Bayero University Kano BUK on Wednesday missed their examinations due to ongoing warning strike action embarked upon by Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU).

This was as the warning strike crippled the academic activities in the institution for hours before it was reopened.

The Chairman Joint Action Committee SSANU/NASU, Mustapha Aminu who spoke to newsmen, said it shut down the institution to press home it demands.

According to Aminu, "We are embarking on a peaceful demonstration. As you are aware, that we have decided to embark on a seven days warning strike and it is a directive from national. Today is the first day, so we decided to hold this peaceful demonstration to show our relevance in the university system.

"The school is already being shut down completely. Nothing is going on. There is 100 per cent compliance from the members. As you know, we are stakeholders, if the Non Academic Staff Union decided not to work, the university will not work.

"The students were writing exams. We also have our children as students. I have two of my children are in the university. So as the National President have said, if you have not paid our salary, how will I pay the school fees of my children. I'm also a father and have my children in the university.

"Likely, we are going to hold another on Friday and by Sunday, it is going to be the last one.

"Well, as we have heard the Minister of Labour and his counterpart in Education, have invited the national body and they are going to have meeting today. So we are waiting for the response of the government for the next line of action," Aminu however stated.

Meanwhile, it was gathered that the institution was later reopened after  hours as students who missed examinations were those expected to sit for exams within the period the protest was carried out.

When contacted the Chairman, Academic Staff Union of University, BUK chapter, Prof. Ibrahim Siraj said the SSANU and NASU don't have the right to  stop students from writing exams.
