Sokoto State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists is to organize a public lecture to immortalize the second Republic President, late Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari.
The State Chairman of the Union, Comrade Dalhatu Abdullahi Safiyal Magori disclosed this at an extraordinary special congress held at the Press Center in Sokoto.
He said, the Union after consultation with various stakeholders, took the decision to organize a memorial lecture in honour of the first executive president of the second republic, late Shagari schedule to take place on the 25th February this year.
"The 25th of February is the birthday of former President Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari GCFR, Turakin Sokoto and the Union wants to use this rare opportunity to immortalize his name by organizing a MAIDEN EDITION OF " SHEHU SHAGARI MEMORIAL LECTURE" says the chairman.
It was further stated during the congress that, the event would run concurrently with other two side events that include fund raising for the promotion of the former presidents legacies , documentation of his political works for the benefit of the new generations as well as a posthumous award to the former Military Governor of northwestern state Late Usman Faruk who forego his personal building as donation in1992.
" Our task now is to agree and come to term with the conduct of the event and if the congress adopted the plan memorial lecture, we will go ahead to inaugurate the various çommittes that will assist in achieving the unions Collective goals.
Late former president Shehu Shagari is one of the very few leaders of Nigeria who were never found wanting their administrations.
Already, the Union had since inaugurated a Committee and sub çommittes for the successful conduct of the first Shehu Shagari memorial lecture in the state.
The Union has since invited prominent persons across the country to serve as either Special guest of honours, guest speakers, guest lecturers or chief launchers at the event that include, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, The former Governor of Jigawa state Alhaji Sule Lamido, The former Governor of Niger state Alhaji Babangida Aliyu and immediate past former chief of Army staff Lt General Faruk Yahaya.
