The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has decried the rate at which Polytechnics in Nigeria are converting to universities, saying that this is not good for the nation's economy.
The Director of Academic Programmes, NBTE, Architect Ngbede Ogoh, said this during a resource inspection and accreditation exercise of the Board to D. S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori-Ewekoro, Ogun State.
He noted that while countries all over the world are moving towards skill acquisition and reaping fine results in the form of positive economic indices, Nigeria on its part is moving away from this, expressing optimism that Nigeria too will keep towing the same line.
He therefore advocated for more attention towards technical education, as part of strategies to surmount the prevailing economic challenges in the country.
Ogoh called on governments, both at the state and national levels to increase the funding of Polytechnics which, he noted, were established to equip their graduates with practical hands-on skills.
"It is saddening to note that some Polytechnics are converting to universities, when the reverse should actually be the case," Ogoh said.
In his remarks at the event, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Goke Rauf, affirmed the Institution's commitment to providing quality training that will ensure the relevance of the institution's graduates, in whatever area of career development that they chose.
He added that the Polytechnic will always be "ready and willing to abide by the Board's policies in order to achieve quality service delivery in our training processes."
