Rivers political impasse: Stop the impunity, call Wike to order, INC tells Tinubu

The apex Ijaw socio-political group, the Ijaw National Congress (INC) worldwide, has expressed displeasure over what it described as "the impunity and indecorous conduct by a Minister of the Federal Government and the apparent connivance of those who ought to curb his excesses."

The INC noted that it has continued to keep tabs on events in Rivers State and their implications for the peace, stability and corporate existence of Nigeria and also find it curious, that after the fatherly intervention of the President of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the crises, the FCT Minister and former Governor of Rivers State,. Nyesom Wike is known to have made several public statements to the effect that "there will be no peace" and "I will give you sleepless nights", in clear reference to Governor Siminialayi Joseph Fubara of Rivers State.

In a resolution signed by its President, Prof Benjamin Okaba, the Ijaw group implored President Tinubu to once again call Mr. Wike and government  agencies and agents who are putting Rivers State at risk of anarchy to order, adding that the generality of Ijaw people and lovers of democracy wonder at the implications of these many displays of impunity and brinkmanship by Mr. Wike.

The statement reads in part: "Congress agrees with the opinions of several critical groups and persons that the security agencies in the state have exhibited open bias for a faction of the legislature under Hon. Martins Amaewhule, whom they gave heavy security cover to hold a sitting against a subsisting court order, requiring both factions to maintain the status quo and to take no official actions until further notice. However, it is gratifying that the police, last Thursday, stopped the pro-Wike legislators from gaining entry to the Assembly complex to carry out their unconstitutional activity. Congress urges the police command to remain resolute in this regard.

"INC worldwide also finds it curious, that after the fatherly intervention of the President of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the crises, the FCT Minister and former Governor of Rivers State, is known to have made several public statements to the effect that "there will be no peace" and "I will give you sleepless nights", in clear reference to Governor Siminialayi Joseph Fubara of Rivers State.

"Mr. Wike has also featured on several network TV stations where he made very provocative statements and scandalous claims against Governor Fubara; accusing the governor of attempting to "take over" his "structure", openly taunting him as an INGRATE who is lacking in INTEGRITY as well as asserting without investigation that the Governor masterminded the burning down of the hallowed chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

"Is Chief Wike at liberty to make scandalous, libelous and inciting comments without fear of sanction from the security agencies or even Mr President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu?

"Is Wike the C-in-C of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, such that those on National Assignment in Rivers State now act according to his whims and caprices or those he supports, in the push to impeach or make Rivers State ungovernable for  His Excellency Governor Siminalaye Fubara, as he publicly boasted?

"We therefore submit to Mr President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, that Ijaw National Congress (INC) Worldwide, it's affiliate bodies, substructures and Activists are direly concerned by the impunity and indecorous conduct by a Minister of the Federal Government and the apparent connivance of those who ought to curb his excesses.

"Mr President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), we implore you once again to call Mr Wike and those Federal Government agencies and agents who are putting Rivers State at risk of anarchy to order. Such elements are inimical to the stability of Nigeria sooner or later.

"We commend the calm, mature and statesmanlike comportment of Governor Fubara who has endured insults and petty accusations with equanimity.
