Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun on Tuesday renewed the commitment of his administration to ensure security of students and their property in all higher institutions in the State.
Governor Abiodun, gave the assurance while speaking at the 13th,14th and 15th combined convocation ceremonies of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijebu-Ode.
The governor who was reacting to recent attack on some private hostels in some communities hosting the higher institutions, said the culprits will be brought to justice.
He said, it is the primary responsibility of government to ensure a secure and conducive environment for all, irrespective of their status, promising to maintain a zero-tolerance policy for criminal
activities.
He said, "I empathize with your concerns, especially in light of the recent robbery attack at one of the off-campus hostels. It is our primary responsibility as a government to ensure a secure and conducive environment for all. Rest assured that we will root out those who are obstructing our efforts to achieve this goal".
"I must reiterate that my government maintains a zero-tolerance policy for criminal activities, and the culprits will be brought to justice. I commend the prompt actions of the State Commissioner of Police, CP Alamutu, in this regard.
The governor announced cash award of N2 million each to the three best graduating students, representing the 2020/2021, 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 academic years, for their academic feats.
He also announced N500,000 to the best graduating students in each of the colleges for the three years from 2020 to 2023.
The recipients are Sunday Oluwafemi, with a GPA of 4.89 (2020/2021); Obadina Patricia Elibe with GPA of 4.89 (2021/2022) and Mercy Deborah Sanyaolu with GPA of 4.86 (2022/2023).
The governor announced a cash of N250,000 to a first-class student, Okewale Nelson, who, despite taking advantage of the ingenious work-study program of the institution, was able to earn a first class degree in Mathematics.
Abiodun disclosed that the feat recorded by Nelson has shown that working while studying is not a deterrent to academic success, calling on other students to take advantage of the program and go the same way.
Governor Abiodun urged the graduating students to reciprocate the gift of learning and character modelling that the institution has bestowed on them, noting that his administration remains committed to creating an enabling environment for growth and development aimed at making the state economically stable for all.
Abiodun promised that his administration would continue to work diligently for the purpose of utilising the vocational courses acquired during their time in school.
"We will continue to work diligently to attract more private investors to our state,
thereby increasing your prospects of securing better employment opportunities".
"Furthermore, we will invest in projects that foster your entrepreneurial and
innovative skills, enabling you to utilize the vocational courses you have acquired
during your time at TASUED. While you embark on this new phase, remember that
the fear of failure should never deter you from seizing opportunities".
He charged the graduands not to allow the fear of failure to deter them from taking the opportunities, noting that the path ahead may be demanding, but challenges are stepping stone to greatness.
In his address, the institution's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oluwole Banjo disclosed that 12,700 students graduated in the 13th,14th, and 15th combined convocation ceremony, while 329 graduated in the postgraduate college.
He also said that 113 students graduated with first-class honours.
"As you move forward into the next phase of your lives, it's important to
reflect on the values that have been instilled in you during your time at
TASUED. Remember the importance of intellectual curiosity, critical thinking and the pursuit of knowledge. Continue to ask questions, seek answers, and never stop learning".
"As you graduate into the world, you'll find yourselves at various times at crossroads, on the precipice of a world filled with opportunities, In a world that is constantly changing and evolving, the knowledge you've acquired is invaluable. You are equipped to not only adapt to changes, but to be agents of positive change. As you step out into the world, remember that success is not just about personal achievements, but also about the impact you make on others and the world around you".
"I encourage you to embrace the challenges that lie ahead. It is through adversity that we discover our true potentials and resilience. When you encounter obstacles, remember that they are opportunities in disguise. Be persistent, be determined, and never lose sight of your dreams".
In his remarks, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council; Prof Rahamon Bello, noted that the institution has developed a reputation as being dynamic, accessible and responsive to change.
Prof. Bello called for more funding from the state government for the University to carry out its core functions of teaching, research, and community Service.
He said, "there is the need to restructure the basis of funding of the University so it can continue to grow and perform its roles unperturbed. Our Council believes in the shared responsibilities by stakeholders in the funding of the University".
I want to seize this opportunity to thank Your Excellency for the subventions given and like to point out sir that in the light of the escalating cost of living and inflation, there is the need t to review the subvention up tremendously so that the University can have a lease of life to run properly and grow".
