A former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, has described corruption as the greatest challenge facing Nigeria, as a nation.
Speaking at the conferment of a doctoral fellow on him by the Institute for Governance and Leadership Studies in Africa (IGLSA) over the weekend, Magu stressed the need for a vigorous and holistic approach to combat this scourge.
"This recognition is not just a personal achievement but a testament to the collective efforts of the dedicated individuals at the EFCC and all stakeholders in the fight against corruption in Nigeria.
"The fight against corruption must be pursued with vigour as corruption remains the impediment against our collective progress as a nation," said Magu during his acceptance speech at the African University of Science & Technology in Abuja.
Magu, who was suspended in 2020 over allegations of corruption and insubordination by then Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, used the occasion to recall his experience at EFCC.
"With the benefit of hindsight and having been at the helm of affairs of the foremost anti-graft agency in Nigeria, I wish to state that fighting corruption is not an easy task. It is a patriotic and selfless service to one's fatherland," he stated.
He also expressed concern over the lack of transparency surrounding the report of the Presidential Investigation Panel led by Justice Isa Salami.
The report, which was expected to provide insights into Magu's suspension, was not made public, leaving many questions unanswered.
In his speech, Magu also highlighted the need for the government to focus on infrastructure development and encouraged Nigerians in the diaspora to invest in the country.
"As our nation adapts to this new reality, emphasizing infrastructure development becomes fundamental to our economic growth. Investments in key sectors like transportation, energy, and telecommunications not only enhance internal connectivity but also boost Nigeria's appeal for foreign investments," he remarked.
The former EFCC boss also emphasized the importance of creating a conducive business environment, simplifying bureaucratic processes, and addressing security challenges for sustained economic growth.
"Creating a conducive business environment is crucial for any economic prosperity. So, we must simplify bureaucratic processes, by promoting ease of doing business and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to empower local businesses," he added.
The event was attended by other dignitaries including the Deputy Governor of Yobe State, Idi Barde Gubana, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof Nuhu Yaqub, and two legal luminaries: Prof Akinseye George (SAN) and Kayode Ajulo (SAN).
