Commissioner reveals number of Out of school children in Sokoto






Sokoto State Ministry for Religious Affairs has identified 776,000 out of School Children roaming the streets of Sokoto metropolis.

The State Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Sheikh Jabir Sani Maihula disclosed this to journalists in Sokoto.

He said the recent survey and statistics conducted by the ministry has identified over 776,000 out of School children across the 23 Local Government area roaming the streets of the state capital without hope of returning to conventional schools.

 Maihula further  said the survey was conducted by some officials of his ministry with a view to come up with modalities on to  return them back to school.

The survey also revealed that, there were over 7,000 Almajiri pupils also roaming  the  same major streets of Sokoto metropolis in the name of begging for alms day and night.

" The state government is making efforts to return back all the 776,000  identified out of school children to schools around the state.

"Already ,the state government in collaboration with the NAPTIP and other relevant  stakeholders have held series of meetings and soon will come out with measures on the issue."

The federal government is expecting an intervention from World bank  that will be used to address the challenges of Almajiri and out of school children syndrome in the state.

"Parts of the interventions includes establishment of Modern Almajiri School in each of the three Senatorial District of the Sokoto State." Maihula stated.

"The commissioner pointed out that the state government has formally  forward its request  to the minister of education and the executive secretary of Almajiri Commission and Out of School children on the need for the establishment of modern Almajiri school and other programmes" .
