The Inspector-General of Police IGP, Mr. Kayode, Egbetokun has read the riot act to perpetrators of electoral violence to steer clear of Saturday’s governorship election in Bayelsa State.
Egbetokun handed down the warning in Yenagoa while briefing newsmen after his meeting with stakeholders in the state.
The IGP had earlier paid a courtesy visit to Governor Douye Diri at Government House before meeting members of the state traditional rulers council at their secretariat.
He later addressed the officers and men of the state police command on the readiness of the force for the Saturday poll.
According to him, the police and other sister security agencies were fully prepared and duty bound to ensure free and fair poll in the state and that troublemakers would be made to face the full weight of the law.
He explained that his visit was in respect of the election and assured that the police was neutral.
While calling on Bayelsans to have confidence in the police, he emphasized that the increased deployment of its personnel in the state was in order to forestall any violence during the poll.
His words, “The election is just four days away. I want to assure you that the police, with the assistance of other security agencies, will provide adequate security for the election on November 11.
“In Bayelsa State, and in the other two states where the election will be taking place, I want to say with confidence that the police and other security agencies have taken a position to be neutral in this election.
“However, those with criminal intention to disrupt the election in Bayelsa will meet our men on ground. They will have the whole of us to contend with.“
"We have done our deployment, and on Wednesday you will start seeing police men and other security agent coming into Bayelsa state and also you will be seeing the same thing happening in the other two states where election is going to take place.
"By Friday everybody deployed for election would have taken their position. We are prepared for this election in terms of security and we have confidence that this election is going to be better than the previous election and for the fact that it is an off season election it gives us more confidence because all the challenges we use to have in general election.
"We have a large reservoir of resources to pull from the other state that election is not taking place.
"So I believe that everything is set for Saturday and I am in Bayelsa today to also address the officer that are in this state who are going to be deployed for this election."
