Truck crushes 200 level Student FUT; two others injured

A 200 level Student of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger state, Abdulazeez was Sunday crushed to death by a truck.

Two other students whose identity could not be ascertained were also seriously injured by the truck.

The incident occured in front of the main gate of the Campus at Gidan Kwano,  outskirt of Minna. 

The deceased was said to be a 200-level student of Electrical Engineering, while the identity of the other two are not yet known as at the time of going to Press.

An eyewitness said, the students were on a motorcycle from their residence in Gidan Kwano and were heading to the school campus when the incident occured.

An eyewitness who wanted anonymity attributed the accident to wrong overtaking.

According to him, "the truck driver was trying to overtake another vehicle ahead of him during which he lost control and rammed into the three students.

"The other two students are receiving treatment in Minna General Hospital while the body of the deceased have been deposited at the mortuary," he declared.

The Niger state Commander of the  Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kumar Tsukwam confirmed the incident and attributed it to over speeding and wrongful overtaking.

"The accident was as result of over speeding and wrongful overtaking which involved a truck that was heading to Bida and a Bajaj motorcycle that was conveying the three students coming from Gidan Kwano to the school campus and the truck and the motorcycle are currently under police custody," the FRSC boss remarked.

Meanwhile, the students in their large numbers stormed the road and blocked the Minna-Bida Highway to protest the loss of life and the injured students.

"We have alerted the school authority on the need to construct speed bumps on the road to avoid this type of ugly incident which have been happening in the past but no action taken," the eyewitness stated.

The Police who were immediately drafted to the scene had  to use teargas to disperse the rampaging students.
