Governor Muhammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has threatened that any group of people or individuals caught diverting the palliatives meant for people of the state will be sent to jail.
He said the pronouncement is not an empty threat, pointing out that already, government has received summons from the Courts for the arrest and immediate prosecution of those caught.
Governor Bago who said this in Minna also declared a 3 day public holiday from Wednesday 6th September to Friday 8th September for effective distribution of the palliatives and also enable Civil Servants to collect the palliative and also monitor the exercise.
The Governor said the state has received only N2b out of the N5b promised by the Federal government adding that the state government will also augment it with the sum of N3.230,550.
The N230,550 according to him is meant for logistics for the use of the standing committee saddled with the responsibility of the effective distribution.
He said for the palliatives to go round, all stakeholders including traditional rulers and Internally Displaced People have been covered.
Bago also announced other packages meant to be rolled out by the state government as a way of bringing succour to the people of the state as a result of removal of the fuel subsidy by the Federal government.
"The state the government has concluded arrangements to purchase 200 units of Compressed Natural Gas CNG that would ply several routes in the state.
"Private and public school students will board the vehicles free while civil servants will be charged drastically reduced fares.
"100 of the buses will be put on the Suleja-Abuja route, 50 will be ply Minna township while the balance will be shared among the remaining local government headquarters in the state," Bago declared.
On the promised grains by the Federal government, the Governor said the trucks are yet to be received but that he has directed that all purchases should be done in the local markets for the benefit of the local farmers and traders.
The Governor also gave a cheering news to students in higher Institutions in the state as plans have been concluded for the reintroduction of bursaries for them.
