Tragedy has struck in Niger state as twenty four people have been confirmed dead during a boat mishap.
The sad incident occured Jabba and Kainji Dam in Gbajibo, Mokwa local government area of the state around 8am.
Though, the exact number of those on board could not also be immediately ascertained.
Chairman of Mokwa local government area, Alhaji Jibrin Muregi who confirmed the incident said twenty one corpses of the victims have already been recovered while local divers in the area are also on a rescue mission of others.
"It is true that a boat mishap occured in my local government and no fewer than twenty four people have been confirmed dead while several corpses have so far been recovered.
"Local divers within the communities affected have mobilized to the spot for rescue operation," he revealed.
Acting Director General of Niger state Emergency Management Agency, (NSEMA) Malam Garba Salihu also confirmed to our Correspondent that members of his Agency have also mobilized to the spot for rescue operation.
"Presently, my Agency in collaboration with Mokwa Local government authority and the community local divers are conducting a search, rescue and recovery operation at the scene of the incident.
"So far, 26 corpses have been recovered while over 30 people have been rescued.
"Over 100 persons are said to be on board the boat when the incident occured and the victims were said to be from Gbajibo, Ekwa and Yankyade communities and were on their way to their farms at the other side of the river Niger which is old Gbajibo," he declared.
