Jigawa State Police command on Monday said it has arrested a gunrunner, Alhassan Sabo Garba who specialized in manufacturing and selling locally fabricated firearms.
The spokesperson of the Jigawa Police Command, DSP Lawan Shiisu who confirmed this in a statement, said Garba's cohort, Haladu is at large.
DSP Shiisu said the suspect was arrested following a tip off and raid on a blacksmith workshop at Garin Gabas Market, Malam Madori Local Government Area, LGA of the state where the firearms were fabricated for onward supply to hoodlums.
The Police image maker said the suspect confessed to have supply the firearms to about seven people while noting that it has launched a manhunt to arrest the persons.
According to him, "At about 1645hrs on the 1st of June, 2023, while acting on a tip-off, operatives attached to the Department of State Services (DSS), Jigawa State Command, raided a blacksmith workshop located at Garin Gabas Market, Malam Madori LGA, where one Alassan Sabo Garba who specialized in manufacturing and selling locally fabricated firearms was arrested and handed over to the police with the exhibits recovered in his possession.
"The suspect is strongly suspected to have been supplying hoodlums with such weapons in carrying out their nefarious activities.
"On interrogation, the suspects confessed that the workshop was established about two months back, and his younger brother Haladu now at large, is the one fabricating the local weapons, while he is responsible for their disposal. He mentioned seven persons, names withheld, to have had such locally made pistols.
"Investigation into the case is in top gear to apprehend all persons mentioned for interrogation and possible prosecution.
"Exhibits recovered in his possession includes: Three (3) locally fabricated pistols, Six (6) finished and semi-finished den guns, One (1) park of twenty-four (24) arrows, Two (2) ATM Cards (Opay and FBN), Four Gigabytes (4GB) memory card, One (1) fingerprint scanner (Zinox), Four (4) pieces of cigarette (Rothmans), One (1) electric heater (burmax), Two (2) hacksaws, Nineteen (19) pieces of knives, Two (2) I.D Cards bearing Sani Alhassan and Sanu Hassan Garba, One (1) black-facing cap, Stirrer, Knife sharpener, Nokia keypad cell phone with two (2) Sim cards, One knife holder and Two thousand and fifty naira (2,050.00k)," DSP Shiisu said.
In a related development, the Police Image-maker said one Abubakar Chiroma alias Sadiq was arrested for trespass into the official residence of the district head, Kanya Babba town, Babura LGA in the state.
