Former Senate Minority leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio has emerged the Senate President of the 10th Assembly, defeating Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari, the former governor of Zamfara State, in the race for .
The former Akwa Ibom State Governor defeated a former governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, to emerge as the Senate President in an election held in Abuja on Tuesday, June 13, 2023.
Akpabio scored 63 votes to defeat his opponent, Abdulaziz Yari, former Zamfara State governor, who got 46 votes.
The result was announced by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Sani Tambuwal.

Akpabio was nominated by Senator Ali Ndume , APC, Borno South and seconded by Adeola Olamilekan Ogun) West while Yari was nominated by Elisha Abbo (Adamawa) and seconded by Jimoh Ibrahim.
