Bishop Babatunde Adeyemi of Diocese of Badagry, Anglican Communion, has urged National Assembly to amend the present electoral laws.
Adeyemi gave the advice during the Pre-Synod press briefing on the First Session of the Seventh Synod organised by Cathedral Church of St. Thomas, Badagry, Lagos on Wednesday.
According to the Bishop, the amendment should include the resolution of electoral disputes by the Courts before the swearing-in of victorious candidates.
“This will help the candidates to concentrate on governance instead of uncertainty, speculation, probability and so on.
“The electoral laws should also include caution for both the umpire and the players who indulge in malpractices.
“If they knew in advance that their actions or inactions will face the full wrath of the law, everyone will be careful and the elections are likely to be free and fair,” he said.
Adeyemi urged the candidates elected on different platform to govern the country in a godly way.
“Our land needs healing and restoration, those elected to lead us should submit themselves to God for him to use them to heal the land.
“They should keep faith with the people and fulfil the promises made while campaigning for various offices,” he said.
The bishop said the theme of the 2023 Synod was entitled: “Salvation comes from the Lord”.
According to him, the theme was chosen to let people know that putting too much hope in man is futile.
He said the theme emanated from Jonah’s experience of a second chance in the Bible in the Book of Jonah.
“In the last eight years, Nigeria had been plagued by sin, all sorts of problems including a tottering economy occasioned by the loss of our currency, unemployment, insecurity of lives and property, brain drain.
“What the country has experienced is the national leadership that abandoned its mandate for ethnic consideration which encouraged a particular ethnic group to ride roughshod on the rest of the country.
“Raping, killing, maiming and sacking farmers from their farms had become the order of the day.
This has resulted in food insecurity,” he said.
Adeyemi said that now that God had given us a second chance, the President-Elect, Sen. Bola Tinubu should restore normalcy.
“Now, All Progressives Congress (APC) has been given a second chance to put her acts in order, otherwise the consequences may not be palatable.
“Before the 2023 general elections, there was palpable fear that if the elections were not properly handled the country could face dire consequences.
“Despite what happened, God has decided to still in His infinite mercy give the country a second chance,” he said.
