Nigeria's Chief Returning Officer for last Saturday's Presidential election and Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has returned the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as country's President-Elect.
Tinubu has emerged winner of the election having polled 8, 794, 726 votes, while Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP got 6,984,520. Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party LP, Mr Peter Obi scored 6,101,533 votes; Candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party NNPP, Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso garnered 1, 496, 687.
A final analysis of the election results showed that Tinubu won in 12 states, while his closest rivals, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP and Peter Obi of the Labour Party also each won in 12 states, with Obi actually winning 11 states and the FCT.
Candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party NNPP, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso came a distant third as he won only in his native Kano state.
Tinubu won in Ekiti, Kwara, Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Jigawa, Niger, Benue, Kogi, Zamfara, Rivers and Borno.
Obi won in Lagos, Enugu, Nasarawa, Edo, Abia, Plateau, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Anambra, Imo and the Federal Capital Territory FCT, Abuja.
Atiku won in Osun, Yobe, Gombe, Adamawa, Katsina, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto and Taraba states.
Declaration
Making the returns for the elections, Prof. Yakubu said; "I Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, hereby certify that I am the Returning Officer for the 2023 Presidential Election held on 25th February, 2023.
"That Tinubu, Bola Ahmed of the APC having satisfied the requirements of the law is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.
"We have taken the decision to present the certificate of return to him and the vice president - elect by 3pm today".
Yakubu added that the commission would on Thursday issue a statement as to when National Assembly members-elect would get their Certificates of Return.
