Doctor docked for killing housewife during operation





An Ilorin Magistrate Court, has ordered  Dr Ayodele Joseph to be remanded  for allegedly killing a housewife, Nneka Akanike, 39, during an operation for appendicitis.


Ayodele, according to the complainant and husband of the deceased, Nnamdi Akanike, was approached at his hospital around sawmill area, Ilorin, after his late wife complained of "mere stomach pain".

"You tested her and confirmed it was appendicitis, he then charged the sum of N80,000.00.

"Along the line, you initially said she can be treated through operation or by injection, but later said it has ripped and can only by operated", according to the police First Information Report (FIR).

The charge sheet added that "After you took his wife to the theatre together with three staff nurses, you refused his plea to allow him see his late wife in the theatre room, until one of the nurses came and tell him she had died.

"But when the corpse was transported to the village in Anambra State, just six hours after death, that it was discovered that her nose had been chopped off".

The police further told the court that investigation showed the accused is a quack medical practitioner.

He was brought to court on criminal conspiracy, negligent conduct, causing hurt and culpable homicide contrary to 97, 196, 253 and 221 of the penal code.

Prosecutor Zaccheus Folurunsho urged the court to remand the suspect, which was objected to by defense counsel, Barrister AA Jimoh.

Magistrate AbdulRaheem Bello in his ruling however ordered his remand at the federal correctional facility, Ilorin and adjourned the matter to April 6, 2023.
