    Rerun: Again, Rev. Fr. Alia emerges Benue APC guber candidate

    Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia has been declared winner of the Benue State All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship rerun primary election held Thursday in 11 Local Government Areas, LGAs, of the state. 


    The election was held sequel to an Appeal Court ruling of January 23, 2023 which nullified the earlier election of Fr. Alia following the suit filed by one of the aspirants, Prof. Terhemba Shija who challenged the process that produced the candidate. 


    The appellate court had ordered the rerun in 11 LGAs of the state including Gboko, Gwer- East, Gwer-West, Guma, Katsina-Ala, Logo, Makurdi, Otukpo, Ukum, Tarka and Vandeikya. 


    Declaring Fr. Alia winner of the election, the Chairman of the Rerun Election Committee, Senator Basheer Lado who declared the result of the rerun from the 11 LGAs said Alia poll 219,002 votes, Bernard Yisa polled 136 votes, Mr. Sam Ode 255 votes, Mathia Byuan, 4,797 votes, Michael Aondoakaa 606 votes and Senator Barnabas Gemade 450 votes. 


    Others include Herman Hembe who left the APC and is now Labour Party, LP, governorship candidate 688 votes, Terwase Orbunde 2 votes, Steven Lawani 120 votes, Mlanga Meng 766 votes, Prof. Terhemba Shija 219 votes and Godwin Tyoachimin, 454 votes. 


    According to the Chairman, the summation of the total votes scored by each candidate in the 23 LGAs of the state showed that Fr. Alia garnered a total of 410,682 votes to beat his closet rival, and running mate, Mr. Sam Ode, who garnered 22,319 votes, Mathias Byuan polled 14,593 votes, Bernard Yisa, 581 votes, Senator Barnabas Gemade 5,125 votes, Terlumun Ikya 2,851 votes, Michael Aondoakaa 3,815 votes. 
    Others include Godwin Tyoachimin who scored 1,139 votes, Steven Lawani, 21,172 votes, Prof. Terhemba Shija, 2,217 votes; Mlanga  Meng 219 votes, Terwase Orbunde, 1,391 votes, while Herman Hembe polled 638 votes. 


    Shortly after the declaration of the results, the State chapter of the party held a Special Congress which affirmed Fr. Alia as the candidate of the party in the state. 


    The State Chairman of the party, Austin Agada moved for the affirmation which was supported by members through voice votes. 


    Meanwhile the Chairman of the Appeal Panel, Umar Kolo said his panel would commence sitting by 12 noon on Friday to entertain complaints from aspirants that were not satisfied with the outcome of the election.
