ANGRY protesters on Wednesday in Udu Area, Udu local government area of Delta state went beserk following rejection of the old naira notes, setting ablaze part of Union Bank, Udu branch and destroyed ATM machines in First bank and Access bank including POS stands.
The protesters reportedly stormed the bank to exchange old naira notes but unfortunately was told that the old naira notes are no longer a legal tender.
This spurred anger among the angry protesters and they eventually set part of the bank on fire and destroyed ATM machines of other banks.
The protesters blocked the busy Express junction and adjourning roads in the area, and chased out POS operators and closed down shops.
Source said the police drafted to the scenes shot live bullets to scare the protesters, adding that one of the protesters was shot in the leg.
Festus Eghaghara, a POS operator said his shop was razed by the protesters.
According to him, "I don't know what I did to them that they burnt my stand."
According to an eye witness, Moses Kpeku, "The protest started moment banks refused to accept the old naira notes.
The frustrated customers descended on the bank, destroying the ATM galleria.
"The news spread fast and others attacked First Bank and Access bank ATM galleries. They started burn fires and blocked the Udu Express junction.
"As I speak they are pulling down politician billboards. Though I heard siren of security people so I have to run home."
