Ogun PDP Gov. Poll: We'll appeal the judgement -- Jimi Lawal

By Peter Adedoyin

A governorship aspirant in the People's Democratic Party (PDP), in Ogun State, Otunba Jimi Lawal on Thursday said he will appeal the Abuja High Court judgement, which dismissed his case against the gubernatorial election that produced Ladi Adebutu as the party governorship candidate.

Lawal, who said this while reacting to the judgement delivered by Justice Inyang Ekwo, that dismissed his suit filed to nullify the nomination of Adebutu's name to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

It would be recalled that Lawal had in the suit, challenged the delegates list that was used in the conduct of the gubernatorial primary election the party held in the state on May 25, 2022.

He contended that the list, which he said contained name of political appointees,  was not in tandem with names of delegates that were democratically elected at the ward congresses.

Consequently, he prayed the court to invalidate the outcome of the said primary election and to order the PDP to conduct a fresh one.

Lawal in a statement signed by
Austin Oniyokor, Project Director, Jimi Adebisi Lawal Campaign Organization (JALCO) and made available to newsmen in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital read, "The Jimi Adebisi Lawal Campaign Organization (JALCO) received with mixed feelings the news of the judgment delivered this Thursday by the Federal High Court, Abuja, in respect of the governorship primary election of the Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held on the 25th of May, 2022".

"Although the judgment went against the issues, facts and the law, we are comforted by the fact that our judicial system allows for appeal to the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court".

"We do intend to exercise our right of appeal without any delay. We are strong in our resolve to test the Constitution of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), its guidelines for Primary Elections and the Electoral Act, 2022. If for nothing else, it will help to deepen our jurisprudence and democracy".

"Flowing from the above, our legal team are taking steps to appeal the judgment immediately".

"While we go through the judicial process, we wish to urge our faithful delegates, party members, supporters, leaders and elders to remain resolute and steadfast, knowing full well that though the wheel of justice grinds slowly, it is steady and sure. No matter how long it takes, the truth shall prevail".
