....as 21, 438 vehicles fail VIO's test

The Federal Capital Territory Administration FCTA said it will crush over 2,000 impounded motorcycles before month end, stating that between January and November this year, it has impounded about 4,522 commercial motorcycles popularly known as Okada.
Mandate Secretary, FCT Transportation Secretariat, Hon. Abdullahi Adamu Candido disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja at an interactive session to review the activities of the secretariat in the outgoing year.
Candido noted that the special taskforce on operations of commercial motorcyclists also impounded 4,522 motorcycles put of which 2,553 have been crushed, and over 2,000 are in the process of being crushed before the year runs out.
He equally decried the high number of vehicles which failed its inspection between January and November 2022, putting the figure at 21,438 out of 37, 572 vehicles inspected within the period.
Candido said; "Between January to November this year, 37,572 vehicles were inspected. 16,198 vehicles passed the test representing 42.94%, while 21,438 failed, representing 57.06% of the total number of inspected vehicles".
According to him, the high failure rate could be adduced to several reasons including the fact that most imported cars popularly known as 'tokunbo' are either accidental or flooded vehicles.
"The associated issues not visible during physical inspection are usually detected during the DRTS computerized inspection, i.e steering alignments, defective suspension/ wiring system amongst others.
"Bad road network in the suburbs and poor motor vehicle maintenance also contribute to vehicle components becoming defective.
"The DRTS has thus made it mandatory for all vehicle owners renewing their car documents to undergo the computerized inspection at any nearby centre. This is aimed at ensuring safer roads in the FCT", he stated.
Candido added that a total of 1,120 suspected traffic violators were referred to the Mobile Court sessions from January to November 2022.
"A total of 18 people were discharged and acquitted during the sessions".
He added that the secretariat was working towards reviving bicycle lanes to enable residents commute within the city with their bicycles.
According to him, while encouraging healthier living, the development would also reduce gas emissions and thus enhance climate change.
