Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi has charged the people of Abia State to vote for him and his running mate, Yusuf Datti-Baba Ahmed and trust them to give a better Nigeria.
Speaking in Aba during the Labour Party rally in Aba, Obi stated that rebuilding Nigeria requires good brains and committed leadership to turn the country around.
The was a mild drama at the event as pro Obi groups; Peter Obi Grassroots Movement, POGM, and the Obidient Across Parties Alliance, OAPA, Abia State chapter, displayed a banner adopting the PDP governorship candidate, Prof. Uche Ikonne and Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for the Abia South senatorial zone. The group, which comprised members of different political parties, explained that their choices are based on the facts on the ground, especially the achievements of the trio whom he described as leaders with milk of human kindness and goal-oriented servants of the people.
Obi said that the condition of Aba is very disturbing and linked the situation to several years of leadership failure which is visible across the federation.
His words; "I came here to greet Aba people for their support. I assure you that under the labour party, we'll build a better Nigeria and Nigeria will never be the same. I came to Aba today and went around the city and it's obvious that all the factories in Aba have all closed. It's similar to Kano, Lagos and Kaduna.
“Labour Party will change that. No place in Nigeria today is safe and our commitment is to secure and unite Nigeria. Under our government, Aba to Port Harcourt will not be more than 30 minutes. Under us, Aba will resurrect. If we come into government, we'll support Aba businessmen. Vote for us and hold us responsible. No fake promises. Trust us to rebuild Nigeria. We're committed and energetic and we're ready to change Nigeria," he said.
On his part, Obi’s running mate, Senator Yusuf Datti-Baba Ahmed said that what Nigeria needs currently for sound growth and development is a man with character and capacity, stressing that in Peter Obi, Nigeria has found a redeemer.
"We're looking for character and capacity and in Peter Obi, we've seen that. The day Obi moved out from one boastful party that became the end of that party that claimed that Abia is the ground. From where I come from we're all Obidient and Abia is obviously Obidient. This is a time we have to live together as one people and be one another's brother."
National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, commended the Aba artisans and others in the entire South East for their creativity and production prowess.
He said; "What you're suffering is as a result of failed leadership over the years and I believe that the people of Abia are very industrious just like the entire People of the South East and that's why the entire South East is the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria. So with government support and a proactive government that knows what to do for the people the sky will be the limit of the people here and that's what we want to provide through Alex Otti.
"We appreciate that if he becomes Governor he can't do it alone and that's why we're parading result-oriented candidates led by our presidential candidate, your own son, Mr Peter
"I appreciate the people of Abia State for their massive support. It's a pointer to the fact that you're genuinely interested to make a change both in your state and National. It's a sign that you're tired of the status quo and you desire the needed change."
Earlier, governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Dr Alex Otti said that the campaign rally is a gathering of liberation.
"We're here to spread the message of freedom to liberate our state from those that have been holding it done," he said.
Otti said he defeated the incumbent PDP government in 2015, but they stole his mandate, alleging that the PDP enjoyed an undeserved victory.
He said that not paying workers' salaries has become a norm in Abia and lamented the situation of health and academic institutions.
Otti also lamented the level of infrastructural decay in the state and the unprecedented debt profile of the state, stressing that if the people are dissatisfied in 2015, they should be worse now.
He vowed that upon taking the oath of office, he will begin the reclamation of Abia and described the 2023 election as the last chance to liberate Abia from those who have ruined it.
