The Parents of students at Dowen College in the Lekki area of Lagos State on Wednesday evening held a candlelight procession in honour of late Sylvester Oromoni.
The parents, clad in black T-shirts with the inscription ‘Dowen Parents Mourn’, raised lit candles as they sang a variety of solemn hymns.
They also carried placards with photographs of the late 12-year-old student, demanding ‘Justice for Sylvester Oromoni’.
During a prayer session held by the parents in front of the school gate before the procession started, they prayed that the soul of the deceased finds repose in the Lord.
The prayer session was led by Mr. Thompson Fabinu.
The parents after marching solemnly with their candles into adjoining street, later prayed for the family of the deceased.
Speaking briefly after the session, Oluwaseun Bolanle, said the parents of other students in the school were traumatised by the incident.
"As I am here, I am struggling to control my emotions. It could happen to anybody's child and we do not pray for a repeat of this anywhere in the country and even in the world. As a parent, one knows how much has been invested in many ways in these young ones," she said.
“The lighting of candles is to pay tribute to a life ‘passed’ and keeping the light burning signifies that the memory still lives on and burns bright.
“The Candlelight no doubt shall promote reflection and signifies remembrance of a life cut short in his infancy.
“We pray that the Almighty God shall comfort the Oromoni’s family during this trying period,” the parents had said in a prior statement on Tuesday.
It would be recalled that the death of Sylvester has been shrouded with controversy, as the father of the deceased student had alleged that his son died from the injuries he sustained during an assault by five of his colleagues who wanted to initiate him into cultism, but the school claimed he died after sustaining an injury during a football match.
