The Ogun State Government has advocated for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) among dredgers, miners and members of host communities as captured in the Nigerian Mining Law to enhance living and safety of people where mining and dredging activities are taking place across the State.
Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mrs. Kikelomo Longe made this known during an inspection tour to some mining sites in Abule-Oko and Magboro in Obafemi/Owode Local Government Area of the State, saying a well-documented agreement is necessary if the supervisory Ministry must give its nod.
Longe said any area where dredging or mining is being carried out, would require engagement of the community members on ways to ensure that such activities do not affect their living standard.
"We'll make sure that parties involved in mining activities have a term of agreement that is done in a safe manner, as well as ensure that dredgers and miners have valid license to operate.
We have our officers across the sites that will give us situation report", the Commissioner stated.
Contributing, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya explained that the visit became imperative due to the reluctance of the operators to vacate the site, after an abatement notice was served, ordering for sealing until licensed operators complied with stipulated guidelines and met with the communities to find a lasting solution to the challenge posed by their activities.
Oresanya said the unwholesome activities of dredgers and miners had caused degradation, serious environmental impact, noise pollution, as well as hampering the social economic development of the affected communities.
Speaking on behalf of members, the Chairman Abule Oko, Magboro Community, Mr. Kunle Adebanjo, appreciated the State government for responding to their plights, calling for repair of roads and other amenities being affected in the area.
